Statement of Rick Lazio

Statement of Rick Lazio on Governor Paterson

New York, NY - Rick Lazio issued the following statement today in response to today's New York Times story on Governor Paterson:

Rick Lazio said, "This is very sad. If these allegations are true, then Governor Paterson must resign and resign now. This is another example of just how dysfunctional Albany is and how desperately we need serious change."
Statement of Rick Lazio

New York, NY - Rick Lazio sent a letter to Attorney General Andrew Cuomo today in regards to his investigation of Governor David Paterson. The contents of the letter are below:

The Honorable Andrew Cuomo
Office of the New York State Attorney General
120 Broadway
New York, NY
10271

February 25th, 2010

Dear Attorney General Cuomo,

The people have the right to know the truth behind the allegations that were reported in today's New York Times. The people also have the right to know that your investigation into Governor Paterson and his involvement is conducted honestly and objectively.

As you begin your investigation, I ask that you state publicly whether you or any of your associates, members of your office or campaign team aided or supplied the New York Times the information it published in any of its stories this past week attacking Governor Paterson, his staff and his conduct; or if you or any of your agents were involved in spreading the rumors about such stories. If so, common decency, if not the law, would demand you recuse yourself from this investigation to ensure an independent process free of your political ambition.

Today, you ordered the State Police to halt any internal investigation into its role surrounding their handling of this matter for fear that they would protect their own interests over the truth. If you do not disavow any connection to this story the same conflict of interest would be present and any findings of your investigation would be immediately called into question.

I and the people of New York await your rapid and full response.

Sincerely,
Rick Lazio

Statement of Rick Lazio

New York, NY - Rick Lazio issued the following statement today in response to today's story about Governor David Paterson.

Rick Lazio said, "The inferences in the New York Times need to be investigated. If proven, they would amount to a grave abuse of power and call into question whether David Paterson can effectively govern. This happens to be the third front-page story that the New York Times has published within the past week. This coincides with David Paterson's public announcement that he will be a candidate for Governor. Taking nothing away from the seriousness of this matter, it is also important to ask how much of this was fed by and for Andrew Cuomo - as he is the main beneficiary of all three of these stories. If Andrew Cuomo is going to be investigating this matter, then the people have a right to know whether he or any of his agents had a role in spreading these stories. It's time for everybody to end their silence, come clean, and return to doing the people's work."

New York County Conservative Chairman Stuart Avrick Endorses Rick Lazio

New York, NY - Lazio 2010 announced today the endorsement of New York County Conservative Chairman Stuart Avrick:

New York County Conservative Chairman Stuart Avrick said, "I am proud to endorse Rick Lazio for Governor. He is the only candidate who can provide the new ideas and new leadership New York desperately needs. He is a committed conservative, and will fight for lower taxes and an end to wasteful spending. I look forward to his election in November."

Rick Lazio, "I am excited to have the support of Chairman Avrick. We need sweeping and fundamental change if we're ever going to end the dysfunction in Albany. When I'm governor, I'll stand up to the special interests so we can have lower taxes and reign in spending. It's time we had a Governor who relentlessly focuses on the future. With Chairman Avrick's help, we will win in November."

Statement of Rick Lazio on Governor Paterson's Announcement

New York, NY - Rick Lazio issued the following statement today in response to Governor David Paterson's decision to declare his candidacy for Governor:

Rick Lazio said, "After the election of Eliot Spitzer four years ago, New York State government entered a new era of dysfunction. Since David Paterson became Governor, the state has lurched from fiscal crisis to fiscal crisis. We now face a massive structural budget deficit, skyrocketing taxes, and a people that have lost faith in their political leaders. Eliot Spitzer, David Paterson, and Andrew Cuomo are all part of this problem. The people want solutions. They want new ideas and new leadership. My candidacy represents a better future for New York. I will create new and better jobs, add a 2.5% hard cap on property taxes, and make the tough choices on spending. I will not hesitate to use the veto to stop more deficit spending. I will fight the special interests, and bring New York the fundamental change it needs so it can be The Empire State once again."

Statement of Rick Lazio on Today's New York Times

New York, NY - Rick Lazio issued the following statement today in response to today's New York Times story about Governor David Paterson:

Rick Lazio said, "It is clear from the story today and the media frenzy of the past few weeks that the New York Times is using its power and prestige to denigrate Governor Paterson and to advance the candidacy of Andrew Cuomo. This is appalling. Governor Paterson being seen as 'increasingly remote' is an editorial opinion and hardly meets the journalistic standards that the New York Times supposedly holds for itself. It's not a news report. It's a news column. The story is clearly the opinion of the New York Times, and its obvious purpose is to benefit Andrew Cuomo. Many people believe that Andrew Cuomo and his supporters have been pushing derogatory rumors about Governor Paterson in an attempt to force the Governor out of the campaign. The New York Times has the reputation as the most important newspaper in America, and to sink to this level and to do so for clearly political purposes for the advantage of Andrew Cuomo is outrageous. The people of New York ought to condemn this kind of journalism. Frankly, the New York Times has done themselves a disservice, and the whole nation should criticize them for this."

Statement of Rick Lazio on Delaying Income Tax Refunds

New York, NY - Rick Lazio issued the following statement today in response to news that Governor Paterson may delay the payment of state income tax refunds:

Rick Lazio said, "This money doesn't belong to Governor Paterson, Andrew Cuomo, or Albany politicians. It was earned by and belongs to hard working New Yorkers and should be returned to them."

Lazio Responds To New York Times Public Editor

New York, NY - Rick Lazio issued the following statement today in response to New York Times Public Editor Clark Hoyt:

Rick Lazio said, "The New York Times got it wrong again today. The comment from their public editor avoided acknowledging the fundamental point -- that the Times' silence on this matter has weakened the ability of David Paterson to govern. Whether the Times is the cause of all these rumours is beside the point. Its efforts to chase this salacious story puts it at the middle of this messy pot and gives the Times the unique ability to set the record straight. Again today, the New York Times abdicated that responsibility and again today the slimy pot that is Albany keeps stewing."

Broome County Conservative Chairman James Thomas Endorses Rick Lazio

New York, NY - Lazio 2010 announced today the endorsement of Broome County Conservative Chairman James Thomas:

Broome County Conservative Chairman James Thomas said, "I proudly endorse Rick Lazio for Governor. We need a true conservative who will lower taxes, control spending, and restore fiscal sanity to New York. He has plans to install real financial controls on our budget, so we can avoid the sort of mess we find ourselves in today. I believe his unique experience building coalitions in the public sector and his business experience from the private sector is exactly what we need leading New York into the future. I urge my fellow Conservatives to unite behind his candidacy."

Rick Lazio said, "I am excited to hear that Chairman Thomas will be standing with me this year for fundamental change. The events of this week have shown us just how dysfunctional Albany government has become. We desperately need new ideas and new leadership if we are going to turn New York into a place that is attractive for businesses to grow and create jobs. With Chairman Thomas on my side we will win Broome County and sweep to victory in November."

Otsego GOP Chairwoman Sheila Ross Endorses Rick Lazio

New York, NY - Lazio 2010 announced today the endorsement of Otsego County Republican Chairwoman Sheila Ross:

Otsego County GOP Chairwoman Sheila Ross said, "I endorse Rick Lazio for Governor because he is the only candidate that will make sweeping and fundamental change, not another Albany politician who will uphold the status quo. Rick Lazio has the new ideas and new leadership we need to make New York the Empire State once again."

Rick Lazio said, "I am excited to have the support of Chairwoman Ross. This week has shown us just how dysfunctional Albany has become. I believe we need to restore fiscal sanity and fix our corrupt system. We need a complete overhaul of New York State government, and we need it yesterday. I am happy to have Chairwoman Ross as a partner as our movement for change continues to build momentum."
